چکیده

M. Gross (1981) calls such verbs 'support verbs', and I shall adopt his terminologLv. These verbs exhibit many interesting properties which have been studied systematically for several French support verbs: faire (make), avoir (have), prendre (take), etre (be), etc. An examination of the results indicates that support verb,; must be taken into account in the parser and in the lexicon of a program of automatic translation. I shall discuss the problem in the context of a possible program for FrenchEnglish translation. In what follows, Vsup designates the support verb, and Nsup stands for the 'supported' noun associated with Vsup. NO and N2 designate the subject noun and the indirect object noun, respectively. The symbol '+ ' is used to indicate a choice.

We investigate samples of support verb...

How to Account for Idiomatic German Support Verb Constructions in Statistical Machine Translation

Support-verb constructions (i.e., multiword expressions combining a semantically light verb with a predicative noun) are problematic for standard statistical machine translation systems, because SMT systems cannot distinguish between literal and idiomatic uses of the verb. We work on the German to English translation direction, for which the identification of support-verb constructions is chall...

We classify support verb constructions by means of their syntactic structure and se...
